My name is Jonathan Mills and I am the owner of RefComs. I have been officiating soccer since 1980 and am currently registered as a high school (NFHS) and college (NISOA) soccer referee.
Discovering the importance of effective intercoms
Over the years, I have seen many changes to the “beautiful game”…. law changes, positioning changes, training changes, uniform changes, even equipment changes. But no change during my career has made a greater impact than intercoms for referees!
Three years ago, after first using a fellow Referee’s set of intercoms during a college soccer match, I was so impressed with the increase in effective communication and game management that I knew immediately I wanted a set. So I went to the internet to purchase and imagine my horror when I found the set selling for $3,000-$4,000!
Certainly these cannot be the only options, I thought.
Striving for the best, affordable communications
With more research, I found a set by a different manufacturer in the $1,500-$2,500 range – still way too much for my budget. Then, I worked with another Referee who had a set that I had not seen or used before. These intercoms worked great and I was told they were not expensive. My web search for these found them to be in the $600-$700 range—still more than I could afford, but definitely in the neighborhood.
Thinking I could do better, I reached out directly to the manufacturer in China and negotiated a distribution price that would allow me to provide these intercoms sets at an affordable cost. Thus I was able to secure my first order of four basic intercom sets at my goal of a “very affordable price”. I kept one set for myself and the three other sets were quickly purchased by a few fellow officials who also knew the significant match management improvement intercoms provide.
Word of mouth spread and soon I was receiving orders from Referees not only in my local High School and College Association chapters, but from Referees across my state, and even from some in neighboring states. Clearly, I was not the only one with a need for a high quality, affordable intercom system.
Thus, RefComs.com was born!
Now, three years later, after countless games and feedback from our customers, RefComs has sought innovation and simplicity and designed their very own intercoms—the RefComs Pro-90s!
